Thanda After-School Project
Thanda After-School works with
children to target the underlying
causes of poverty and HIV/AIDS
within their communities
Thanda After-School empowers 235 students,
K-12, through lessons, skills, and activities after-school,
to think creatively about their futures and their community.
Our goal is to find long-term solutions to issues the students face,
with a focus on unemployment, poverty, and HIV/AIDS.
Thanda After-School evolved from years of research on orphans and vulnerable children in KwaZulu-Natal. Thanda After-School offers what a poor rural school cannot- motivation and empowerment for the students, additional tutoring, emphasis on creativity, sports, and other engaging activities. Thanda After-School also works with grade 12 students to create employment opportunities and with community members to find sustainable solutions to unemployment and poverty.

Thanda After-School is a new method of orphan care, HIV prevention, and poverty alleviation that focuses on long-term changes rather than band-aid solutions. Although a permanent project, Thanda After-School is also a pilot for this model to develop a structure and curriculum that can be replicated in other schools in South Africa. With a school in every village, we believe that South Africa will be able use this model to provide care and alleviate poverty. During the first 2 years, we will be developing a model curriculum book so that other schools can replicate this program themselves.

Thanda After-School is based at the Sacred Heart Children's Home in rural Umtwalume, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The students in the program are from the children's home and the local junior primary, senior primary, and high schools. The Thanda After-School Project started in February 2008 and runs 5 days a week for 235 students each day. Please visit the Programs Page for more information.
